Symphonic and Concert Bands
Course Description: A performance based, co-curricular class utilizing a wide variety of literature composed/arranged for the wind band medium to explore the many genres of music. Course includes performance in assigned concert ensemble as well as the marching band and pep band. Students will gain a larger understanding of cultures and events/periods in history as related to the music and the composers of the works. We will strive for not only technical accuracy and competency on our instruments, but also for a high level of emotional sensitivity to the music and its performance. Additional opportunities for performance will be available to students seeking them, including various small ensembles, winter percussion ensemble, winterguard, jazz ensemble, solo and ensemble festival, and various honor groups. Courses will focus on the ensemble’s role as an ambassador for Louisville Male High School. We, as a performing unit, are often placed in situations in which we are representing the school, and/or community, and it is my intent to present an exemplary image of what goes on here at Louisville Male High School.
Daily work: Includes proper rehearsal etiquette, attendance, promptness, proper care and storage of materials, playing tests on ability to perform music, having all necessary materials available, rhythm exercises, listening logs, and rehearsal preparation.
Performances: Includes all concerts, contests, parades, athletic events, spirit rallies, small ensemble event, honor band performance, and any other performance event as specified by the director.
Please note: Band is a co-curricular class that requires commitment of time outside the normal school day. Failure to participate in after school rehearsals and performances will affect your course grade, as outlined above, and could result in dismissal from the Louisville Male Band Program if these absences are deemed excessive.
